MANGGARAI BARAT - Di antara kita mungkin agak lupa dengan nama Pulau Komodo yang terletak di ujung paling barat Provinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). Tapi, siapa sangka, pulau yang di dalamnya terdapat Taman Nasional yang dihuni hewan langka komodo itu menjadi salah satu nomine dalam New 7 Wonders of Nature (tujuh keajaiban baru alam).
Taman Nasional Komodo (TNK) mencakup beberapa pulau di Selat Sape yang secara administratif berada di Kecamatan Komodo, Kabupaten Manggarai Barat (Manggar), NTT. Sesuai namanya, di dalam Taman Nasional itu masih hidup komodo.
Komodo adalah binatang yang bentuknya sekilas mirip buaya. Dia hidup sezaman dengan dinosaurus. Keberhasilan komodo survive (bertahan hidup) sampai zaman modern inilah yang menjadikannya masuk dalam nominasi tujuh keajaiban baru alam.
Disebut ajaib karena sementara binatang sezamannya -dinosaurus- sudah punah, komodo masih mampu bertahan hidup.
TNK meliputi Pulau Rinca, Padar, dan Komodo. Ketiga pulau itu berada di antara sekitar 60 pulau yang tersebar di Selat Sape. Selat itu sendiri menjadi batas alam antara Provinsi NTT dan Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB).
Dari hasil pendataan terakhir, populasi binatang yang oleh masyarakat lokal disebut buaya darat itu sekitar 2.400 ekor. Buaya darat dalam arti sebenarnya, yaitu buaya yang hidup di darat. Bukan makna kias (konotasi) untuk menggambarkan lelaki yang suka main perempuan.
Separo dari populasi komodo hidup di Pulau Komodo. Separo lainnya berada di Pulau Rinca. Di Padar tidak lagi ditemukan binatang itu. ''Mungkin mereka bermigrasi ke Pulau Komodo atau Rinca,'' begitu jawaban setiap ranger ketika ditanya soal itu.
Ranger adalah sebutan pendamping pengunjung yang ingin melihat komodo dari dekat. Mereka adalah polisi hutan atau pemandu dari Putri Naga Komodo (PNK), yang ditunjuk untuk mengelola TNK sebagai objek wisata. Dari ketiga pulau tersebut, Padar memang paling kecil dan posisinya diapit Pulau Komodo dengan Rinca.
